Question 1. Why was Kezia afraid of her father?

Answer: Kezia feared her father because he was very strict and authoritative. He never spent time playing with her and would often give her a frightening look over his spectacles.

Answer: Kezia's grandmother urged her to build a closer relationship with her father. She suggested that Kezia spend time in the drawing room having meaningful conversations with him. Additionally, she encouraged Kezia to create a pin-cushion from a lovely piece of yellow silk as a thoughtful birthday gift for her father.

Question 1. Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How did this happen?

Answer: Kezia stitched most of the pin cushion herself. Not knowing what to fill it with without her grandmother, she searched her parents' room for her absent mother. Finding sheets of paper on the bedside table, she tore them into pieces to stuff the cushion. Unfortunately, her attempt to please her father went wrong when he found out the sheets were his Port Authority speech. He got very angry, scolding and punishing Kezia harshly with a ruler for touching his things.

Question 2. Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers”. What kind of father was Mr Macdonald, and how was he different from Kezia’s father?

Answer: Kezia thought about how there are "different kinds of fathers." Mr. Macdonald, for instance, was a loving father who was gentle, forgiving, and enjoyed playing and laughing with his children. He was friendly and kind to them. In contrast, Kezia's own father was strict and not very friendly.

Question 3. How does Kezia begin to see her father as a human being who needs her sympathy?

Answer: One day, when Kezia's mother and grandmother were at the hospital, she stayed home with Alice, their cook. That night, frightened by a dream, she called for her grandmother but found her father comforting her instead. He gently carried her to his bed, where she felt safe and held onto him tightly. Watching him sleep, Kezia realized how hard he worked every day, and she affectionately told him he had a big heart.
