NSEB Olympiad Exam 2025 Preparation Tips
NSEB Olympiad Exam
The NSEB Olympiad Exam 2025 (National Standard Examination in Biology) is one of the most important exams for students who love Biology and want to explore it beyond their school syllabus. The exam is conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). It is the first step towards representing India at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
Students studying in Classes 11 and 12 with a strong interest in Biology can participate in the NSEB exam. The paper mainly covers topics from the school syllabus but in more depth, including areas like genetics, human physiology, ecology, and biotechnology. The exam is conducted in offline mode and tests both knowledge and understanding of concepts.
Preparing for NSEB 2025 needs a smart and focused study plan. Along with NCERT books, students can refer to Olympiad books like the PW NSEB preparation book, which includes solved examples, concept maps, and previous year questions. These help in improving understanding and confidence for the exam.

How to Prepare for NSEB?
The exam tests students’ understanding of biology at a deeper level than regular school exams. Preparing in the right way is very important to perform well and score high in this Olympiad:-
1. Go Through the NSEB Syllabus Properly
Before starting your preparation, the first step is to carefully go through the NSEB syllabus. Knowing the topics will help you plan your study time and focus on the important chapters. The syllabus is mainly based on Class 11 and 12 Biology, but questions are often asked in a slightly different way than in school exams.
-
Check the syllabus thoroughly for all topics in cell biology, genetics, plant and human physiology, ecology, and reproduction.
-
Understand the NSEB exam pattern: 48 single-correct questions and 12 multiple-correct questions.
-
Keep a list of topics to cover so you can track your progress while preparing for the NSEB Olympiad.
2. Start Studying Chapters One by One
After understanding the syllabus, start reading each chapter carefully. Do not rush through all topics at once. Focus on completing one chapter before moving to the next. This method helps in understanding each concept properly and avoids confusion.
-
Divide each chapter into smaller sections and study them step by step.
-
Take your time to understand diagrams, charts, and key processes.
-
Use your NCERT books and other books for NSEB exam preparation to read and understand each topic.
3. Make Your Own Notes While Studying
Making notes while studying helps in remembering important points for longer. Your own notes are easier to revise before the exam and can include diagrams, flowcharts, and key points in simple words.
-
Write short points, definitions, and formulas in your own words for quick revision.
-
Include important diagrams and label them clearly to understand processes like photosynthesis, cell division, and human anatomy.
-
Highlight frequently asked topics based on previous year questions for the NSEB Olympiad preparation.
4. Solve Sample Papers and Previous Year Questions
Once you finish studying the chapters and making notes, start practising sample papers and previous year questions. This will help you understand how questions are asked in the NSEB Olympiad and manage time during the exam.
-
Solve at least 3–5 sample papers before the exam to get familiar with the NSEB exam pattern.
-
Time yourself while solving questions to improve speed and accuracy.
-
After solving, check which questions were difficult and revisit those topics in your notes.
5. Identify Weak Areas and Practice More
During your practice, you will notice some topics are more difficult or confusing. Focus on these areas to improve your performance. Regular practice of weak areas will help you feel confident and ready for the NSEB Olympiad.
-
Make a list of chapters or concepts you find difficult and revise them regularly.
-
Solve extra questions from your books for NSEB exam preparation on those topics.
-
Discuss doubts with teachers, friends, or online resources if some concepts are still unclear.
6. Revise Regularly and Stay Organised
Revision is very important to remember all the topics for the NSEB Olympiad exam. Plan a weekly revision schedule so that you can go through all chapters and notes before the exam. Staying organised will make your preparation smooth and effective.
-
Use your own notes and solved questions for quick revision.
-
Focus more on topics that are frequently asked in previous NSEB exams.
-
Revise diagrams, formulas, and key points multiple times to retain them easily.
