Breakdown of the NDA Exam Pattern Written Test

The written portion is split into two distinct papers held on the same day. Mastery of the exam pattern requires balancing your time between Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Paper 1: Mathematics

This paper tests your knowledge of Class 11 and 12 mathematics. You will face 120 questions that need to be solved within 2.5 hours.

  • Total Marks: 300

  • Marks per Correct Answer: 2.5

  • Negative Marking: 0.83 for every wrong answer

Paper 2: General Ability Test (GAT)

The GAT is the scoring powerhouse of the NDA. It is divided into two parts: English and General Knowledge.

  • Total Marks: 600

  • Number of Questions: 150

  • Marks per Correct Answer: 4

  • Negative Marking: 1.33 for every wrong answer

NDA Exam Pattern and Syllabus for Mathematics

When looking at the exam pattern and syllabus, the mathematics section acts as a gateway. If you do not secure the qualifying marks in this paper, your GAT paper will not even be evaluated.

The core topics include:

  • Algebra: Sets, Venn diagrams, complex numbers, and quadratic equations.

  • Calculus: Differential and integral calculus, focusing on applications of derivatives.

  • Trigonometry: Trigonometric ratios, identities, and inverse functions.

  • Statistics and Probability: Mean, median, mode, and classical definitions of probability.

  • Analytical Geometry: 2D and 3D shapes like lines, circles, and spheres.

NDA Exam Marking Scheme and GAT Structure

There is a lot of variety in the GAT department. You need to know how the 600 marks are spread out in order to use the NDA exam marking scheme correctly.

Part A: English (200 Marks)

This part checks your grammar, vocabulary, and understanding. You should expect queries about:

  • Finding mistakes

  • Words that mean the opposite and words that mean the same

  • Better sentence

  • Choosing words

Part B: General Knowledge (400 Marks)

This section is broken down into a number of topics:

  1. Physics: The qualities of matter, heat, light, and electricity.

  2. Chemistry: Elements, Compounds, and Equations for Chemical Reactions.

  3. Biology and Human Physiology in General Science.

  4. History and Culture: The Indian freedom movement and events in world history.

  5. Geography: The land, weather, and resources of the Earth.

  6. Current Events: Major events in the US and throughout the world.

NDA Exam Pattern 2025 to 2026

While the core structure remains stable, comparing the exam pattern of 2025 with the 2026 expectations helps in identifying trends. The UPSC has lately increased the weightage of conceptual clarity over rote memorisation. In 2025, the physics and geography sections started to have more questions that were based on real-life situations. Students should expect the same level of difficulty in 2026, which would need them to read

SSB Interview Stage in the NDA Exam

Once you clear the written cutoff, you enter the second phase of the NDA. The Services Selection Board (SSB) interview is a 5-day process that evaluates your personality and intelligence.

  • Stage I: Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and Picture Perception & Description Test (PP&DT). This is a screening stage.

  • Stage II: This involves psychology tests, group testing officer tasks (GTO), and a personal interview.

  • Final Stage: The Conference, where the board makes its final recommendation.

The SSB stage carries 900 marks, making it just as important as the written exam.

Key Strategies for the NDA Exam Pattern 2026

Preparation isn't just about studying; it’s about studying smart. Since the exam penalises wrong answers, accuracy is your best friend.

  1. Time Management: Practice solving 120 math questions in 150 minutes. You cannot afford to get stuck on one problem.

  2. Focus on English: Many students ignore Part A of the GAT, but it is the easiest way to bag 200 marks if your basics are strong.

  3. NCERT is King: For science and history, stick to Class 9 to 12 NCERT books. They are the primary source for the UPSC.

  4. Current Affairs: Spend at least 30 minutes daily reading the news to stay updated for the 40-mark current events section.
