GATE 2025 Overview

The GATE 2025 exam will be conducted online as a Computer Based Test (CBT) and will last for 3 hours. There will be 27 papers available across different engineering and science disciplines. The exam will be worth 100 marks. It will consist of multiple choice questions (MCQs), numerical answer type (NAT) questions, and multiple select questions (MSQs).

For MCQs, you will have four options with only one correct answer. NAT questions will require you to enter a numerical value, while MSQs will have more than one correct answer, and you must select all the correct options. For MCQs, 1 or 2 marks will be awarded for each correct answer. There will be negative marking for incorrect answers in MCQs, but no negative marking for NAT or MSQs.

30-Day GATE 2025 Study Plan

1. Revise and Remember: In the final month of your GATE exam preparation, focus on revising everything you’ve studied so far. It's essential to ensure that you recall key concepts and formulas. Go through the major topics from your syllabus, like Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude, and your core subject (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering).

This phase of revision will ensure that you’re well-prepared for the GATE exam. When learning how to prepare for GATE, remember that revising subjects such as Calculus, Control Systems, and Fluid Mechanics can significantly boost your confidence.

2. Create Your Own Notes: To make your GATE 2025 preparation more effective, write your own notes as you revise. For example, if you’re studying Thermodynamics for Mechanical Engineering or Power Electronics for Electrical Engineering, summarise the main concepts, formulas, and problem-solving techniques. Personalised notes make it easier to recall important information on exam day and act as your final revision tool. When planning your gate preparation strategy, it’s crucial to ensure that your notes are clear and well-structured for quick revision.

3. Set Dedicated Study Hours: When wondering how to prepare for GATE, setting aside specific hours each day for studying is key to consistent progress. In the last month, dedicate 8-10 hours each day to revising and solving problems.

This time should focus on filling any gaps in your GATE preparation and covering all the important topics. Whether it’s Strength of Materials in Mechanical Engineering or Digital Logic in Computer Science, allocate study hours according to the weightage of each topic. Consistent study hours will help you stay on track to clear the GATE exam.

4. Practice Sample Papers and Past Papers: One of the right ways to prepare for GATE is by solving sample papers and previous years' question papers. This practice helps you understand the exam pattern and boosts your confidence. Solving papers related to key areas such as Environmental Engineering, Electromagnetic Fields, or Data Structures will help you identify your strong and weak areas.

By working through previous years' questions, you will get a better idea of how to manage your time during the exam. Make this a part of your GATE preparation strategy, as it will help you refine your problem-solving skills and time management for the actual test.

5. Take Mock Tests Regularly: Mock tests simulate the real GATE exam experience. They are crucial for practising time management and familiarising yourself with the online exam interface. Solve mock tests for core subjects like Fluid Mechanics for Civil Engineering or Machine Design for Mechanical Engineering.

This way, you’ll be able to check your progress, improve your speed, and identify areas that require further attention. Solving mock tests is one of the right ways to prepare for the GATE exam, and by doing so, you’ll be more relaxed and efficient when you face the real exam.

6. Familiarise Yourself with the Virtual Calculator: Since GATE now uses a virtual calculator, it’s important to practise using it well in advance. For subjects that require numerous calculations, such as Engineering Mathematics and Electrical Circuits, practise with the virtual calculator to save time during the exam.

If you want to know how to prepare for GATE exam effectively, mastering the use of the virtual calculator will give you a significant advantage on exam day.

7. Focus on Speed and Accuracy: Improving both speed and accuracy is crucial when learning how to clear the GATE exam. In the last month, try solving questions from key areas like Machine Design and Power Systems under timed conditions.

Aim to complete each section in less time while maintaining accuracy. This approach helps you finish the exam on time, with the possibility of reviewing any missed questions. By focusing on speed and accuracy, you improve your chances of performing well and clearing the GATE exam.
